Rising temps, the last tropical showers, and a little dust make this month lively — and a bit testing. Here are quick, natural, easy-to-use tips so you can enjoy surf, sunsets, and pura vida without the mayhem.

Quick wins
  • Use natural repellents (citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus).
  • Cover dusty rides with a scarf and goggles.
  • Freeze a pareo for a 10-minute chill hit.

1. Use natural mosquito repellents

Prime mosquito season means protection > panic. Skip harsh chemicals when possible: essential oils like citronella, lemongrass, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint work well when blended into a good carrier. Buy local products or make this simple, lasting spray at home.

Santa Teresa Natural Mosquito Repellent — 30ml
  • Essential oils: 15 drops lemongrass, 8 drops lemon eucalyptus, 15 drops citronella, 10 drops peppermint. (Optional: 2 drops arborvitae or cedarwood.)
  • Base: 15 ml filtered water, 7.5 ml light carrier oil (coconut or jojoba), 7.5 ml alcohol (vodka or rubbing alcohol).

How-to: Add oils to a clean 30 ml glass spray bottle, pour in carrier oil, then alcohol, and top with water. Shake gently. Shake before each use and spray on exposed skin or clothing.

2. Eliminate standing water

Mosquitoes breed fast. Check vases, coconut shells, bottles, buckets, tyres, and plant saucers weekly — empty or cover them. It takes minutes and saves many bites.

3. Cool down without A/C

No A/C? Try local tricks: wet a pareo or light towel, freeze it for ~10 minutes, then wrap or drape it for instant cooling. Take cool showers and rest during peak heat (midday).

4. Hydrate like a local

Hydration is non-negotiable. Water is the base — coconut water and fresh cucumber or lemon water restore electrolytes. Limit coffee and alcohol (they dehydrate).

5. Use A/C mindfully

If you use aircon, aim for 24–25°C (75–77°F). That avoids shocking your body with big temperature swings and keeps you comfortable without wasting energy.

6. Protect yourself from dust

Dry months mean dust — especially on ATVs and unpaved roads. Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth, wear a scarf or mask when riding, and protect eyes with sunglasses or goggles. Little ones: keep them covered and shaded.

Keep this on the fridge, in your surf van, or taped to your water bottle.
