Surf Safe: The Rules of the Wave

Whether you’re a local legend or a first-time frother, these are the universally respected surf rules — not made to kill your vibe, but to protect it.

1. Right of Way

Whoever is closest to the peak has priority.

Don’t drop in on someone else’s wave. That’s the quickest way to lose respect—and maybe your teeth.

2. Don’t Snake

Paddling around someone to steal priority is dirty play.

Respect the lineup. Wait your turn.

3. Paddle Wide, Not Through the Peak

If you’re heading out, don’t ruin someone’s ride.

Paddle around the breaking zone — not through it like a clueless cannonball.

4. Hold Onto Your Board

Your board is a weapon when it’s not under control.

Always use a leash, and never ditch your board in a crowd.

5. Respect the Locals

This is their home break.

Be humble, say hello, and surf with aloha. You’re a guest in the lineup.

6. Don’t Hog All the Waves

It’s not a competition.

Share the wave. Let others have their turn.

7. Help Other Surfers

See someone in trouble? Step in.

Karma’s real. We all look out for each other.

8. Know Your Limits

Paddling into conditions above your skill level puts everyone at risk. Injuring yourself or others is not good for anyone.

No shame in sitting it out or watching the pros do their thing.

9. Keep the Beach Clean

Leave no trace.

Pick up after yourself — and maybe even that extra plastic bottle.

10. Be Kind in the Lineup

You’re not just surfing waves, you’re surfing energy.

Bring good vibes, not aggro ones. Smiles go further than stink-eyes.
