Zipline in Malpais Costa Rica

The MALPAIS Canopy Zip Line.. Back to Basics: Flying Through Oropopo’s Soul

At the end of the Malpaís road, where fishermen bring in their day’s catch and Cabo Blanco’s ancient forest surrounds this point, lies Reserva Natural Oropopo—a 20-hectare sanctuary born from a dream and sustained by conviction. Half-hidden by time, it’s the sacred silent space that inspired our MalPais Canopy zip-line: a mile-long, 11-platform flight through 200 + tropical tree species, designed to lift not just your body, but your spirit.

Zipline in Malpais Costa Rica
Taking it all in before the flight — a Malpaís Canopy Tour guide overlooking the jungle canopy where forest, ocean, and sky meet.

Surf-style launch platform — where balance, trust, and a deep breath come together before you fly.

A suspended bridge between platforms — part adventure, part meditation, all jungle.

Once you launch, fear fades fast.

It’s about trusting the moment, letting the forest carry you, and realizing how different the world looks when you rise above it.

One name anchors the magic: Stefano Silvestri, an Italian-born conservationist who arrived on the Nicoya Peninsula in 1985. In 1989, he and close friends purchased the forested land that now forms Oropopo, entrusting it to nature. Stefano still lives there, working through the Red Costarricense de Reservas Naturales (santateresahoy.com, quadtourscostarica.com). His bamboo home offers a glimpse into a life rooted in purpose, where grand ideas are born under the same canopy you’ll zip through.

“We left this finca in conservation,” Stefano says, “and it became Reserva Natural Oropopo,” a testament to committed stewardship

When you arrive at the Malpaís Canopy Tour, there’s no flashing signs or chaos—just the sound of leaves rustling, monkeys calling in the distance, and the friendly laughter of local guides who welcome you like an old friend. For families, it’s a place where kids can unplug from screens and plug into wonder, where wide eyes and fearless giggles echo through the trees. For couples, it’s an unforgettable shared rush—hand in hand, heartbeats rising together as you fly through green cathedral canopies and catch glimpses of the Pacific glinting through the branches. And for solo adventurers, it’s a rare moment of silence and awe that comes only when you’re suspended in midair, breath caught between jungle and sky. The guides keep you safe, smiling, and connected—not just to the harness and cable, but to the energy of the land. You’ll zip past towering Espavel, Guarumo, and Cortez Amarillo trees, spot toucans, morpho butterflies, and maybe even a monkey swinging by to say hello. It’s exhilarating and grounding all at once—the kind of experience that loosens whatever’s tight in the soul. And when your feet finally touch down after the last line, you’ll carry more than photos. You’ll carry a memory stitched into your spirit. Something real. Something alive.

Can You Hike It? Or Be Lifted Through It?

Forget dusty trails. Oropopo is meant for flight. You won’t tread dirt—your path is air.

  • 11 elevated wooden platforms, anchored between 5–30 m high.
  • Almost 1 mile of cables, weaving above creeks and canyons—one 300 m canyon ride and a 500 m grove-on-edge glide included (canopymalpais.com).
  • Safety-certified local guides anchor your experience in both thrill and mindfulness.

It’s a trail that sparks introspection—and the occasional scream of delight.

A Symphony of Trees & Wildlife

Oropopo sits where dry and humid tropical forests embrace, boasting around 140 to 200 tree species (malpaisbeach.com, malpaisbeach.com):

  • Espavel (Anacardium excelsum) and Cortez Amarillo (Tabebuia ochracea) rise majestically with cathedral-like crowns (malpaisbeach.com).
  • Dry-forest gems like Pochote, Guácimo, Indio Desnudo, Guarumo add texture and rhythm to the canopy (malpaisbeach.com).

And life dances around you:

  • Howler and capuchin monkeysand leap overhead.
  • Coatis, peccaries, shy deer, armadillos, and the elusive margay or ocelot roam unseen (malpaisbeach.com).
  • Toucans, macaws, rocket-fueled hawks, spectacled owls, and the glint of Morpho butterflies create a kaleidoscope of sound and color .

 Life-Changing Back to Basics Energy

  • Elevated perspective: see the land, ocean, and forest merge into living art.
  • Adrenaline with mindfulness: each zip-line is a heartbeat, each guide a storyteller.
  • Spiritual restoration: guests describe feeling renewed—lighter, clearer, aligned.

A Word for the Hesitant (and the Brave Anyway)

Let’s be honest — not everyone loves heights. If your stomach tightens just thinking about stepping off that first platform, you’re not alone. The Malpaís Canopy Tour isn’t just built for adrenaline junkies; it’s built for real people. The guides know this. They’ve walked thousands of first-timers through that moment where fear taps you on the shoulder and asks, are you sure?

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to face it alone. On the longer, extended lines, a guide can zip right alongside you — close enough to talk, laugh, breathe, and remind you that you’re solid, secure, and exactly where you’re supposed to be. That simple presence changes everything.

Once you launch, fear fades fast. The noise in your head goes quiet. Suddenly you’re not looking at the forest — you’re moving through it, above it, seeing the land the way birds do. Rivers become ribbons. Trees turn into architecture. The ocean shows up in flashes of blue between branches. Perspective shifts — literally.

This is what makes the Malpaís Canopy special. It’s not about conquering the jungle or collecting another tour ticket. It’s about trusting the moment, letting the forest carry you, and realizing how different the world looks when you rise above it.

If you give it that first step, you’ll land changed — steadier, clearer, and quietly proud you didn’t let fear make the call. And that feeling? That one sticks with you long after your feet hit the ground.
