Publisher’s Letter – Santa Teresa Dirt Road Relaunch
There’s a moment, just before sunrise, when the jungle breathes deep and the sky hesitates in that hushed purple-pink. It’s a moment of promise. And right now, as a village, we find ourselves in one of those moments.
Santa Teresa, Malpais, Playa Hermosa, Manzanillo—the whole southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula—has always had a unique rhythm. It includes the tides, the howler monkeys and beyond. It’s the spirit of the place. The way the jungle kisses the sea, the way strangers become neighbors, the way the dirt road leads you not just through town, but inward, to something simpler. Something real.
Our first edition of the Dirt Road Newspaper launched in tabloid print format, a real newspaper, on June 18, 2008. Today marks the re-launch of our digital format—still a real newspaper, now with more tools to reach more people.
We are relaunching the Santa Teresa Dirt Road newspaper because we believe the time is right. After a whirlwind of years—pandemic pauses, real estate rushes, shifting tides of tourism—our community stands at a threshold. And in this quiet between waves, we see a chance to reflect, reconnect, and rebuild—not just buildings, but identity.
Before the pandemic, Santa Teresa was blooming. AyA had arrived, water permits were flowing, and our main road was alive with new restaurants, small businesses, and fresh dreams. When the borders closed and the world went still, our town became a rare open sanctuary. What followed was a cultural surge—mobile workers, influencers, a blur of selfies, hashtags, and jungle parties that rippled across the internet.
For some, it was a blessing. A business boom. For others, a wake-up call. We saw what happens when the pace quickens but the roots don’t deepen. Prices soared. Long-time rental residents were pushed out. The soul of the village—our sense of connection, of shared purpose—was tested.
But this is not a story of loss. It’s a story of return.
We believe now is a moment of opportunity. Things are quieter. And in that quiet, we hear the call to come back to basics: to sustainability, wellness, and culture—the living heart of Pura Vida.
That’s why we’re here. The Santa Teresa Dirt Road newspaper isn’t just news—it’s a reminder. A celebration. A community noticeboard, yes—but also a love letter to the things that made this place magical in the first place. We’re here to tell the good stories. To highlight the people who show up every day with heart. To share healthy living tips, local knowledge, jungle wisdom. To map out where to eat, surf, stretch, explore—and to do it in a way that uplifts everyone.
We aim to be in the hands of the traveler the moment they book. With the help of the managers and owners of guest houses, this will open up a huge window of opportunity. Giving this inclusive look into our area will boost longer stays, increase spending, and create happy tourists rooted in adventure, exploration, family, fitness, health, and food—supporting our villages back into a state of sustainability.
Our goal is to support local businesses through honest, inclusive guides. We want travelers to discover more than just the obvious, and we want residents to feel proud of what’s being shared about our home. Through positive, engaging stories, maps, photos, and videos, we aim to bring the real, positive Santa Teresa and surrounding areas back into focus: wild, welcoming, grounded, and alive.
Let’s invite the world to return—not just to visit, but to be part of something meaningful.
Let’s welcome families, wildlife lovers, adventure seekers, wellness travelers. Let’s remind people that nature is not a backdrop for a selfie, but a teacher, a healer, a friend. Let’s offer a hand to bring back the basic Pura Vida.
The past may be written, but the future is still ours to shape. And it starts with small steps: a printed recipe, a photo of a howler in the canopy, a spotlight on a local farmer, a map that actually helps someone find that hidden Tico restaurant.
We believe in the village. We believe in Pura Vida. And we believe in a bright, grounded, and beautiful future rooted in sustainability, wellness, and local culture.
Thank you for being part of this new chapter.
With heart,
The Santa Teresa Dirt Road Team
