Where Land Meets Sea: Waterkeepers Protect Santa Teresa’s Precious Waters

In the heart of Santa Teresa—a town where surfboards outnumber stoplights and the ocean sets the rhythm of life—a dedicated force works tirelessly to protect the very essence of this paradise: the water.

Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, a grassroots nonprofit based right here in Santa Teresa, is a proud member of the global Waterkeeper Alliance. They are committed to monitoring, protecting, and restoring water quality across coastal watersheds and marine ecosystems.

Their mission is clear: to keep rivers running clean, beaches pristine, and the ocean thriving. Through research, fieldwork, education, and advocacy, they tackle the unique environmental challenges facing this community—from inadequate waste management systems to the growing impacts of tourism.

But their efforts reach far beyond data and reports. They roll up their sleeves—establishing weekly beach cleanups, educating locals and visitors about sustainable practices, monitoring water quality, raising awareness, advocating for change, and supporting the infrastructure the community urgently needs. In 2024 alone, their initiatives prevented nearly 1,215,567 kg of waste from reaching landfills and the sea.

Their vision is a sustainable and regenerative Santa Teresa, where development lives in harmony with nature and every individual plays a role in safeguarding precious water resources.

With every project, Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper brings essential tools, science, and education—and with every action, they deliver a powerful reminder: water is life, not property.

The Water Is Not Ours: Rethinking Our Relationship with Nature

Water is not a possession. It’s a gift—a flowing, living force that sustains all life. Yet, we often speak of “our water” as if we hold ownership over something that belongs to all of us and to none of us.

Let’s shift this way of thinking.

Water doesn’t need us—we need water. It existed long before humans and will outlast us unless we continue to disrupt its balance. Damming rivers, polluting oceans, and treating water as a commodity have pushed ecosystems to the edge. And when nature suffers, so do we. We are nature.

We must stop acting like owners and start living like stewards. Water is not ours to claim—it is ours to protect.

So let’s drop the illusion of control. Let’s speak and act with reverence. Let’s ensure that future generations inherit rivers that still run, oceans that still breathe, and rain that still falls clean.

Our vision is bold and beautiful: communities where rivers run clean, oceans teem with life, and every drop of water is honored for the miracle it is.

Because water is not ours. But its future is in our hands.
